Course description:

This course will be of interest both to survivors of traumatic events and those who, in their work, come across victims of traumatic incidents.

The specially selected key text is written by a former sufferer of PTSD who has done his own research into the problem of PTSD and brings together in a comprehensive volume knowledge of the symptoms, complications and causes of PTSD and information about some available treatment approaches.

Case histories are given and there is information about taking legal action, a discussion on debriefing methods, and essential reference material including Internet sites.

The textbook is easy to read but is not only aimed at those recovering from PTSD.  Its unique compilation of information, personal stories and insights is invaluable to many professionals including the counsellor, psychotherapist, social worker, voluntary helper, member of  the emergency services, law enforcement officer, lawyer, pastor or teacher, and relatives of PTSD sufferers.

A crucial chapter identifies bullying as a major cause of PTSD, thus extending the discourse on traumatic stress and its effects to include slow-acting or cumulative sources of stress as well as sudden incidents and disasters.

Suggestions for further reading concerning therapies suitable for PTSD will be given for those who wish to train in such therapies or expand their knowledge to help people choose appropriate treatments.

Entry Criteria: Open entry.

This course will be of interest to counsellors, hypnotherapists and psychotherapists as well as all those who care for or come into contact with people likely to suffer from forms of post-traumatic stress including victims of traumatic events or witnesses of such events and their helpers or families.

Successful graduates will receive the Certificate in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness. If you are a qualified therapist or health professional this course will lead to the Certificate of Professional Development in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness - P.D. Cert. (PTSD)  These are awarded by UK College of Holistic Training and are private UK qualifications.

This course is NOT in itself a qualification in counselling or psychotherapy, though it may be used in conjunction with such qualifications to signify additional specialist learning.
