Course overview

This course is a multidisciplinary study of environmental health, introducing the science, methodologies, hazards and other aspects of a wide variety of environmental concerns.  The set textbook has been written for non-specialists to appeal to students from various backgrounds. Scientific concepts and research are explained in language accessible to any student with a good general education and maths is kept to an absolute minimum.

The discipline of environmental health is explained as comprising of the core areas of toxicology, exposure assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication. There is specific focus on disease, energy production, manufacturing industry, food production, and community metabolism (sewage, water and other aspects of modern life giving rise to environmental hazards).

This course will be of interest to students of health and wellness as well as those who have an interest in environmental awareness and those who have responsibility for environmental health risk management as part of their jobs.

The final multi-choice essay question will have, as one choice, the chance to write a mini-project in which you can focus on an environment known to you (a town, building, workplace, or other space) and comment on its state of environmental health and the hazards it may present to those people who live or work there and those who are just passing through. Hazards to wildlife, plant life, the water system and domestic pets or working animals may also exist. You can also comment on the efforts being made (if any) to address those hazards, and the regulations in force that affect the issues (you may have to do further research to discover what regulations apply).

The text used is US-based and suited to the international student. The course concentrates on the science of environmental health rather than on laws, laws, rules and regulations.  Regulatory laws and procedures differ from country to country and students requiring regulatory information should consult the appropriate agencies. You will need to refer to additional sources if you wish to be up to date with relevant laws and regulations applicable to your location or field of work.

Successful graduates will receive the Diploma in Environmental Health and the Modern Lifestyle.

The college is accredited by the International Association for Distance Learning.
