Course overview

This course is about theories of the unconscious how our unconscious minds affect our behaviour and our feelings. Many trainings in coaching, hypnotherapy and even counselling cover the concept of the unconscious only briefly. In some hypnotherapy trainings, Freud and Jung are treated very briefly and psychodynamic (Freudian and post-Freudian) theory is not presented in an up-to-date way. CBT is often regarded by critics as a therapy without depth, though modern cognitive approaches recognise the unconscious and sometimes work with it. This course will broaden your understanding of theories of the unconscious and show the connection of the deeper parts of the mind  not only to our past and to our cultural heritage but also to our spirituality.

Module 1 of the course gives a modern presentation of psychoanalytic theory and shows how it is very relevant to psychotherapy today. Key Freudian concepts are explained in modern terms with cultural and clinical examples.

Module 2 explores some of the definitions and theories of the unconscious mind, including theories which prefer not to not use the terms "unconscious" or "subconscious" but use different language instead. This module provides perspectives for anyone who is involved in counselling, psychotherapy or hypnotherapy or interested in the nature of the mind.
