Course description (updated for 2015):

This course focuses on solid, evidence-based scientific information on understanding attention deficit disorder in children, adolescents and adults.

The course uses a textbook by a medical professor who is one of the foremost specialists in ADD/ADHD, but is written for the general educated reader or parent as well as for the professional.

The course includes:

  • Popular myths and misconceptions about ADD/ADHD exploded;

  • The new paradigm of Impaired Executive Function & what it means;

  • Information from scientific research;

  • New ways of assessing child and adult ADHD;

  • How treatments work and how they translate into improved behaviour;

  • Co-morbidity: other impairments that often exist alongside ADHD.

  • Recommendations for further reading.

Please note that this course does not include theories of “Indigo Children” or other New Age approaches to children who appear to be developmentally different.  Before spiritual explanations are considered, a sound science-based understanding of the psychology and complications of ADD/ADHD, of mainstream treatment approaches, and of what life with a person with ADD is like, is the only responsible way of being well-informed and having the knowledge to take part in decisions about a child's or an impaired adult's welfare. In the UK and many other countries, parents and guardians have a statutory responsibility to ensure that a child receives appropriate medical or clinical attention if necessary.

Even most counsellors and psychotherapists have not studied the ADD syndrome in depth. This course, like the others in our unique “Awareness” series, aims to enhance the understanding of professionals and lay persons.

Entry Criteria: Open entry.

This course will be of interest to counsellors, hypnotherapists and psychotherapists as well as all those who care for or come into contact with people with attention deficit disorders.

Successful graduates will receive the Certificate in Attention Deficit Disorders Awareness. If you are a qualified therapist or health professional this course will lead to the Certificate of Professional Development in Attention Deficit Disorders Awareness - P.D. Cert. (A.D.D.)  These are awarded by UK College of Holistic Training and are private UK qualifications.

This course is NOT in itself a qualification in counselling or psychotherapy, though it may be used in conjunction with such qualifications to signify additional specialist learning.

The college is accredited by the International Association for Distance Learning
